The Impact of Intercontact Time within Opportunistic Networks: Protocol Implications and Mobility Models

چکیده
Opportunistic networking, where node mobility is utilized to achieve message delivery, has become an important class of mobile ad hoc networking. A critical component of performance analysis for opportunistic networking is a basic understanding of contact and inter-contact times for commonly studied mobility models. In this paper we give original results nodal contact-times and analytically show that inter-contact times of mobile nodes can be closely approximated as exponentially distributed in Random Waypoint and Random Direction mobility models. We then examine the effect of HELLO intervals on the observed inter-contact rate of nodes. Through extensive simulation study, we show that our analytical results for mobility characteristics are accurate.

متن کاملResidual Inter-Contact Time for Opportunistic Networks with Pareto Inter-Contact Time: Two Nodes Case
Opportunistic networks (OppNets) are appealing for many applications, such as wild life monitoring, disaster relief and mobile data offloading. In such a network, a message arriving at a mobile node could be transmitted to another mobile node when they opportunistically move into each other’s transmission range (called in contact), and after multi-hop similar transmissions the message will fina...
متن کاملDuty cycling in opportunistic networks: intercontact times and energy-delay tradeoff
Portable mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are the enablers for communications in mobile ad hoc networks. In order to optimise their energy usage, one of the most popular techniques is to implement a duty cycling policy, which periodically puts the user device in a energy saving mode (e.g., Bluetooth inquiry scan phase or turning off the WiFi interface) for a certain amount of time. C...
متن کاملImpact of Human Behavior on Social Opportunistic Forwarding
The current Internet design is not capable to support communications in environments characterized by very long delays and frequent network partitions. To allow devices to communicate in such environments, delay-tolerant networking solutions have been proposed by exploiting opportunistic message forwarding, with limited expectations of end-to-end connectivity and node resources. Such solutions ...
